MOGADISHU — Hayat Market has been awarded Best Supermarket of the Year 2026, placing the home-grown retailer at the centre of one of Somalia’s most visible business celebrations. The honour was presented during the Somali Business Awards gala, where companies from across the economy were recognised for performance, service and impact.

On stage, a Hayat Market representative accepted the trophy against a backdrop carrying the retailer’s familiar red-and-green identity. The presentation was followed by handshakes, official photographs and a gathering of the Hayat delegation with the award — scenes that captured both the formal importance of the occasion and the pride surrounding the win.

A headline moment for Somali retail

The award arrives at a time when the expectations placed on supermarkets in Mogadishu are rising. Shoppers increasingly look beyond basic availability. They also judge retailers by cleanliness, organisation, product variety, price, staff responsiveness and the ease of moving between physical and digital shopping channels.

Against that background, the title is more than a ceremonial label. It is a statement about the standard customers now expect from modern retail businesses and about the competition to deliver a reliable experience every day. A supermarket may be judged on the award stage once a year, but its reputation is formed aisle by aisle, transaction by transaction and delivery by delivery.

“A supermarket may be honoured on one night, but its reputation is built through thousands of ordinary customer experiences.”

The Somali Business Awards describes its programme as a broad platform recognising businesses across many industry categories. Its 2026 gala was scheduled for 14 August at Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu, bringing together business leaders, employees, partners and guests for the awards night.

From a local initiative to a wider retail network

Hayat Market says it was founded in April 2020 and is headquartered in Mogadishu. In a relatively short period, the business has expanded its retail presence and product offer, serving customers across groceries, fresh food, household essentials, electronics, textiles and other everyday categories.

Its official branch directory lists locations in Taleex, Zope, Boondheere, Digfer and Alikamin. That network gives the brand a presence across several parts of the capital and reflects a growth strategy based on being closer to the communities it serves.

The company has also connected its store-based operation to Adeeg.com, which it identifies as its official e-commerce platform. That link matters in a city where convenience is becoming an increasingly important part of the retail promise. Customers may still value the ability to walk through a well-stocked supermarket, but many also expect dependable ordering, careful packaging and fast delivery.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

● The award puts customer experience, consistency and service standards in focus for the year ahead.

What the award recognises

The trophy itself carries a short explanation: recognition of exceptional achievement, innovation and excellence in the supermarket sector. Those words point to the wider work behind a successful retail operation — procurement, stock planning, supplier relationships, food handling, merchandising, technology, security, staff training and customer care.

None of those functions is especially visible when it works well. Customers simply find the items they need, move through an orderly store and complete their purchases without unnecessary delay. But delivering that simplicity consistently requires coordination across the entire business.

“The strongest meaning of the award will be found in what Hayat Market does next — in its stores, its delivery service and its response to customers.”

For Hayat Market, the award also creates a new benchmark. Recognition can strengthen trust, but it raises expectations at the same time. Customers will look for continued availability, fair value, clean stores, helpful staff and service that remains dependable as the business grows.

A wider signal for Somalia’s private sector

The celebration also points beyond one company. Somalia’s organised retail sector is changing alongside the needs of a growing urban population. Modern supermarkets increasingly serve as important links between importers, local suppliers, workers, delivery services and households.

When a retailer improves its stock systems, expands fresh-food handling or introduces more convenient ordering, the effect can travel through that wider chain. Suppliers gain a more structured route to market, employees gain experience in modern retail operations and customers gain more choice in how they shop.

Awards do not replace independent measures of quality, and a trophy cannot guarantee the same experience in every branch. Still, formal recognition can make service standards more visible. It can encourage competitors to improve and give customers a clearer language for the things they value: reliability, safety, respect, choice and convenience.

That is why the Best Supermarket of the Year title carries weight beyond the stage photograph. It reflects the growing importance of professional retail to daily life in Mogadishu and the broader role that well-run local businesses can play in building confidence in Somalia’s private sector.

The challenge after the celebration

The immediate moment belongs to the people behind the brand: store teams, warehouse staff, buyers, drivers, managers, technology workers and customer-service employees whose routines shape the experience shoppers receive. The photographs from the gala show the award being shared, not held as an individual achievement.

The longer test begins after the applause. Growth must be matched by consistent standards across branches. Digital convenience must be supported by accurate orders and timely delivery. Wider product choice must be balanced with quality control, responsible pricing and reliable supply.

Hayat Market now carries the title Best Supermarket of the Year 2026. If the award is to become more than a framed memory, the company will need to turn recognition into renewed attention to the customer — the person who enters a branch looking for daily essentials, places an order online or depends on the retailer to make family shopping simpler.

For one evening in Mogadishu, the spotlight was on the stage. For the rest of the year, the real story will continue in the aisles.
